an email from an evil person

Tuesday, Jul. 06, 2010 | 11:40 PM

since i will be moving to california, i obviously can't take jessie with me, and my dad hates her and doesn't want her to stay here, so i tried posting her on criagslist. i was honest about her old age and her issues. this is the kind of response i get:

One should NEVER offer a dog FREE because people "bunch" batches of dogs for research facilities who use them for tortuous experiments. They get a few bucks for each dog and the sale to such a facility is a death sentence, which should be your fate instead of your dog's.

You obviously have no heart to follow to California. My wish for you is that when you get old, nobody loves you or cares for you and you end up a street person. If you had this dog from age 6 and she is 14, then you have had her for 8 years. Unless you were a small child when you got her, you should be an adult. But an adult accepts responsibility for commitments made but a selfish child feels no guilt for abandoning a loved one for a short-term pleasure. All of the problems you mention she has are treatable -- including potty training an older dog. You just never made a real effort to learn how to do it.

Try making a real effort to find a rescue organization that will find a good home for her instead of using Craigslist which can only lead to a bad end for your beautiful old girl. And you should offer a substantial contribution to the organization to make up for your failures as a dog owner. It is because of people like you that hundreds of thousands of dogs are euthanized each year for one lame reason or another -- especially in this down economy when people are leaving dogs in abandoned houses or dumping them in the country like where I live to avoid any reason responsibility or accountability for their life choices.

You would probably also be the type of person to dump your child when it didn't suit your purposes anymore -- like that Smith woman in Texas who drowned her two sons because her boyfriend didn't want to date a woman with kids. Sound familiar? Look in the mirror. Instead of small boys, your "inconvenience" is a small dog. ; (
If I were local, rather than in Southern California, I would take her in and find her a good home or keep her myself if one were not available. As it is, I have over my limit because I have taken in dogs from people just like you -- failures as dog owners!
