new guy at petco

we went to petco today to get some ferret food. there was a guy at the register that i'd never seen before. i thought he must be new, since he seemed nervous.

my dad wasn't happy about buying ferret food, so he wasn't in a friendly mood. the guy asked him if we had a petco card, he turned from the register to find my dad already holding it out. he looked at the computer again, and then began to mumble the amount as he turned, but then stopped, finding again that he was already holding it out. i don't know. my dad didn't say a word, and it just seemed awkward, and the poor guy was nervous.

my dad then asked about some calendars that were sitting on the counter. "are these free?"

"no, it's a 3.99 donation, and then you get one... well it goes from one to five... this is my first day."

my dad then walked to some display that was at the front of the store, with some fancy looking dog treats in cups. "are these free?" he asked.

"no, i think that's just display."

i was standing there, thinking, oh my gosh! stop asking if things are free! not only did i feel stupid, but he was making the guy nervous. i felt bad, cuz... he was cute. and he makes me want to go to petco more often.

and i smiled at him.
