baby gerbil update... and stuff

Saturday, May. 26, 2007 | 6:07 PM

i held the baby gerbils for the first time yesterday. from what i've read, it seems that gerbils are different than most small animals that i'm used to, and the babies shouldn't be handled immediately. of course, i've read many people incorrectly state that baby rabbits or kittens shouldn't be held, because the mother will attack or neglect them. that isn't true at all. i'm sure there's been times where some stressed mother animals weren't used to humans, and attacked or neglected their babies after being handled, but that's rare i'm sure. especially cats. cats are some of the best mothers i've seen. better than humans if you ask me.

but since i'm not experienced with gerbils, i decided to leave them alone at first. i read on the website of one breeder, saying that they start handling them when they're about five to seven days old. so though it was really hard, i waited till they were five days old.

i think they're really cute. for some reason i think they're cuter than baby rats or mice, though i'm not sure what the differences are.

...

also, here's a video of little bunny number two. since he's my favorite, i've held him a lot. he's by far the most calm of the four. he'll let me do anything to him. i wanted to take a video of this, though it was hard, having to hold the camera. sometimes i can get him to stretch and yawn and do cute things, but it was hard with just the one hand.

i think the three week rule applied more when i younger and less experienced. i'm pretty certain now that there's two girls (numbers 1 and 4) and two boys (numbers 2 and 3.)

it looks like i'm not gonna be able to carry them around in this little container much longer, doesn't it?

...

i also wanted to mention that on thursday, i was the only one who was able to do the homework. the homework was apparently hard, and he asked, "who got it done?"

i was only one to raise my hand.

"did anyone besides sarah get it done?"

no one.

he gave everyone else an extra week, and i get extra credit. that's pretty cool, don't you think?
