600 miles

Wednesday, Jun. 23, 2010 | 4:44 PM

last tuesday, david picked me up and took me to his house in salem, and i spent the night there. the next morning, his parents, him and i all headed down to berkeley. the drive took about ten hours. the three of them were all yelling at each other, and it was very stressful.

when we arrived at david's new living quarters, we carried in all of his stuff in the dark. when finished, his parents went to a motel, leaving david and i to sleep in his new queen sized bed.

his parents arrived early the next morning, and out we went into the city of berkeley. david had to get a parking permit for his motorcycle, him and his mom and i met with financial aid advisers, we ate, we drove around and went to a park on top of a hill, we went to a grocery store, and we ate again. after unpacking some of his stuff, his parents left us again and we went to sleep.

his parents left early the next morning without stopping by again. we had friday, saturday and sunday to ourselves.

we spent friday walking around berkeley, mostly on the campus. we found the buildings that his summer classes were to be in, we explored some naturey areas, we went into a neat building, we walked on a few streets just outside of campus and we ate in the "gourmet ghetto."

on saturday, we went to san francisco. we started out by going into the ferry building and eating some food from some tents outside of it. we then walked through china town to the cable car museum, and then up onto a hill with a view of the city. we walked up staircases through nice, plant filled neighborhoods. we ended up down at ghiraredelli square, where we shared an ice cream thing that wasn't actually very good. we then went into a place called "musee mecanique," which is a place where they have a bunch of old machines where you stick a coin in, and character's move around, or music plays, or pictures flip to create a movie, or a playable game is activated.

it was getting late at this point, so we walked through fisherman's wharf to the bart (train) station. there was a bunch of people on the sidewalk, creating art in a showy way for tips, or wanting to draw a picture of you for money.

the next day, we went out to san francisco again. this time we started in the mission district. we ate at a burrito place and then walked to mission delores, which is a fancy church that half survived the earthquake. after spending some time there, we walked down haight street to the golden gate park. we spent a short time at the park, and then took a bus down to the beach, just in time to see the sun setting over the ocean.

i was still wanting to see the golden gate bridge, and so we walked quickly on some trails along the coast, hoping to get to a spot with a view of it. once my legs were in extreme pain and my lungs were hurting as well, i finally saw the bridge, just as it was getting dark. we then walked to a bus stop to take us to the bart station.

the next morning, i woke up at 6:30 am and quickly got ready to leave. i woke david and cried as we said goodbye. i didn't have much time for tears. i had to make it to the airport in time.

i walked alone to the bart station, got on the the fremont train, got off at the oakland airport station, got on the airport shuttle, checked into the airport, waiting a long time for my plane, and then boarded the very claustrophobic air craft. it was when i sat down in my seat on the plane that i started freaking out. i'd never flown before, and now i was doing it all by myself.

when the plane started rolling, i started crying. partly because i was sad about leaving david, but mostly because i was terrified. as we turned onto the runway, tears were streaming down my face. finally the plane took off and we started rising into the air. i stopped crying soon after looking out the window and seeing how cool the earth below looked. it was like, "i'm scared, i'm scared, i'm scar-- oooh!"

i took pictures during the whole flight, and all of my anxiety and fear went away. it didn't seem like it had been very long at all when we started going down. it was only an hour from oakland to eugene.

i exited the plane and walked through the airport and quickly spotted my mom. my dad drove us home in a rental car.

now i am here in portland... and david is 600 miles away in berkeley.

sad.
